Welcome to our travel blog, where we share our experiences exploring the world while working from anywhere. We have a couple of objectives in writing this blog that we’ll organize into sections:
- Where we are now (and what’s next): we want to provide a quick and easy way for family and friends to know where we are and where we’re headed.
- Exploring the World: we want to share about the countries and cultures we visit.
- Digit Nomad Life & Learnings: we want to capture and share what we learn about how to untether and live a more flexible lifestyle while still being productive.
- Funny & unexpected moments: this is bound to offer opportunities for some laughs, and we could all use more laughs! So we want to share those.
- Photo & video gallery: self-explanatory.
- Resources & recommendations: we want to share great places to stay, top co-working spaces, invaluable travel gear and apps, and more.
We won’t talk about each of these in every post, but we’ll try to organize our posts this way, so you can gravitate toward what interests you.
But first, how we got here…
We had been working for the past half dozen years to design our businesses so that we could run them in a way that allowed us to work from somewhere in the world for a month or so, a couple of times each year. For strategic reasons, Stephanie’s company switched to entirely remote in 2017, and about a year ago Michael’s team was sufficiently strong that he could work from home. In 2023, Stephanie achieved her life-long dream of buying a house near Acadia National Park, and has been spending significant amounts of time working from there and hiking on weekends, and Michael joined her as often as he could.
We were debating whether to spend this month in Paris or New York when we realized that we really had reached a point where our jobs could be done from anywhere with a reliable internet connection – not just Maine or New York, but anywhere. In February of 2025, we decided to take the leap and see where this lifestyle would take us. Because of Michael’s Luxembourgish EU citizenship, we decided that we should start by staying in EU countries, and then decided it would be best to start in an English-speaking country so that we had time to start studying next languages. By March 23, we had sold or given away most of our belongings, listed our home for sale, packed two backpacks each, and were boarding our international flight for our first destination: one month in Ireland.
Where we are now (and what’s next)
Our First Destination: Ireland!
We had long wanted to visit Ireland and had planned to go with our kids in the summer of 2020 – don’t need to explain why that didn’t happen. Now, Ireland has become our testing ground, a time to figure out how to live minimally and functionally, how to balance work with time zone differences of (at the moment) up to 8 hours, how to stay in touch with all our loved ones, and more.
We’re starting with two weeks in Galway then two weeks in Kilkenny.
Digital Nomad Life & Learnings
We have only just begun so don’t have too much to share yet for “learnings.” However, one thing has immediately become obvious: while we were a little afraid we’d be tempted to work less, we’re finding the opposite is happening: we’ve realized we haven’t figured how to balance work hours – starting at 9am in Galway and often working until 4pm Eastern time makes for a long day! One of the implications is we probably won’t have anything interesting to post until each weekend.
Funny & unexpected moments
So far, the chief amusing and unexpected moments have been from some of the people who just can’t quite figure out what we’re doing or why, or just can’t reconcile it with what they apparently must expect from “people our age”.
One friend asked incredulously if we were just going to pack a couple of roller bags and head out (clearly an inconceivable concept as is). When I explain no, we were packing a couple of backpacks…well, the look on her face was precious. Apparently, we’re not “normal”. We’re ok with that!
Join us!
We’re hoping you’ll follow along on our journey, share your own stories and tips, and give us advice! Those of you who know us know we don’t blog, so your advice or how to write one you’ll enjoy reading is welcome! Plus, we’re excited to hear about your adventures and learn from your experiences.
It is not an accident that we are not posting on social media. First, we try to stay off of it. Second, we worry about social media sucking the folks we love down who-knows-what black holes. Finally, we also have a favor to ask of you. While we would love for you to share a link to our blog with anyone who might be interested, we ask that you do not put any part of our blog on any form of social media.
